Abide in Me
Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.jo
John 15:4-5
Spoken on the last night of his life, walking with the disciples, likely past vineyards. He had told his hearers before: whoever has ears, let them hear.
A branch does not strain to produce grapes. It stays attached, and fruit happens. Apart from me you can do nothing is the most freeing hard sentence Jesus ever said, because it relocates the entire pressure of the Christian life from our effort to our connection.
Guard the connection above the activity. Daily time in his words and honest prayer is not one task on the list. It is the vine everything on the list grows from.
