Free indeed

Forty days ago, you read a promise and started walking:

If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

John 8:31-32

Continue. Know. Free. You have now lived inside that sentence for forty days. So before anything else, go get the paper from Day 1, the sentence about where you stood with him. Read it. Then write today's sentence next to it. That distance, however small, is the experiment reporting its first results.

When Jesus first said those words, the crowd bristled: we have never been slaves to anyone. His answer cut to the bone, and it explains what these forty days have really been about:

Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

John 8:34, 36

He was never talking about Rome. The chains he came to break are the ones we forge ourselves: resentment that runs our thoughts, anxiety that runs our nights, greed that is never satisfied, contempt that curdles our relationships, the exhausting performance of being seen. You have spent forty days loosening every one of those chains, one small act at a time. That loosening has a name. Free indeed.

And here is the beautiful surprise at the end of the road. After forty days of hard commands, second miles, opened hands, and closed ledgers, listen to how he describes the load: come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest; for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. How can all of that be light? Because of what it takes off you. Scorekeeping is heavy. Anxiety is heavy. Image management, resentment, and self-justification are crushing. His way costs everything and weighs almost nothing. The ones who endure to the end find that out.

Not if you perform well. Always.
