DAY ONE

    Meet Jesus for yourself

Most people know Jesus secondhand. A childhood Sunday school. A grandmother's faith. A movie, a meme, an argument online. Fragments, filtered through other people.

For the next 40 days, you go to the source. The four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are the earliest and fullest record of what he said and did. Everything in this journey comes from them.

Here is the verse this entire challenge is built on. Jesus said it to people who had just started believing in him:

If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

    John 8:31-32

Read it slowly, because the order matters.

He did not say, agree with my word. He did not say, admire it, debate it, or defend it. He said continue in it. Live inside it the way you live inside a house. Keep walking it when it is easy and when it is not.

And then comes the promise, in sequence: continue, then know, then free. The knowing comes after the walking, not before. Truth, in his teaching, is not something you settle from the couch. It is something you discover on the road.

Freedom is the destination. Freedom from what? Over the next 40 days you will hear his answer: from resentment, from anxiety, from the exhausting work of keeping score, from the opinions of the crowd, from the grip of money, from fear of death itself.

That is a big claim. You should not take it on anyone's word. You should test it. That is exactly what he invites you to do, and it is exactly what this challenge is.

Tomorrow: the world he walked into, and why his first announcement hit like a thunderclap.
