The Lamp on a Stand
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16
From the Sermon on the Mount, spoken to ordinary fishermen and farmers. Jesus did not say try to become light. He said ye are.
A lit lamp under a basket is a contradiction, wasted on purpose. The light is not for the lamp. And the aim of visible goodness is precise: not that people admire you, but that they glorify your Father.
Stop dimming what God has lit in you out of fear or false modesty. Do good openly, then deflect the credit upward. Shine so he is seen.
